Boeing is to add in-flight Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity to more of its planes, meaning more travellers will be able to get online while they travel. The company, which already equips its 737s with kit that allows airlines to offer on-board Wi-Fi and cellular access, will also begin kitting out its 747-8 and 777 by the end of 2013, it announced on Thursday. Boeing's 787 aircraft can also currently be retrofitted with Wi-Fi, and the range should get "a full set of connectivity offerings as part of its standard catalogue" by the end of this year, the company said. All new Boeing planes will have the option of providing wireless media streaming in 2014. The worldwide market for in-flight Wi-Fi services is expected to hit $1.85bn by 2018, according to research company Global Industry Analysts. Among the latest airlines to announce plans to add Wi-Fi to their onboard offerings is US carrier JetBlue, which said this week it will introduce Wi-Fi to its aircraft in 2013. Elsewhere, Delta Airlines is planning to expand wireless access to its long-haul international fleet next year while Norwegian Airlines recently added Wi-Fi to 46 of its planes and is scheduled to do the same for its entire fleet before the end of this year.

OBJECTIVE At the end of the semester, the student shall be having a good understanding of all the
components of the hydrological cycle. The mechanics of rainfall, its spatial and temporal
measurement and their applications will be understood. Simple statistical analysis and
application of probability distribution of rainfall and run off shall also be understood.

Design of structure against Natural Hazards
Abstract:
It has become clear that natural and related technological hazards and disasters are not a problem that can be solved in isolation. Rather, the occurrence of a disaster is a symptom of broader and more basic problems. Since 1994 a team of over 100 expert academics and practitioners, Including members of the private sector, have assessed, evaluated, and summarized knowledge about natural and technological hazards in the USA from the perspectives of physical, natural, social and behavioral, and engineering sciences.
The major thesis of the findings is that hazard losses, and the fact that there seems to be an inability to reduce such losses, are the consequences of narrow and short-sighted development patterns, cultural premises, and attitudes toward the natural environment, science, and technology. A way for people and the nation to take responsibility for disaster losses, to design future hazard losses, and to link hazard mitigation to sustainable development is proposed. This paper offers a USA perspective. However, it is hoped the paper will provide private and public decision-makers globally with insights upon which to evaluate the effectiveness of their respective nation’s hazard mitigation frameworks.

New Samsung strikes new Note after Apple suit
Samsung Electronics Co unveils the second generation of its popular Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet at Europe's biggest electronics show in Berlin later on Wednesday, as the South Korean firm comes under pressure to innovate after losing a U.S. patent battle with Apple Inc.
A U.S. federal jury last week found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.
The Galaxy Note phablet, Samsung's second most popular smartphone after its flagship Galaxy S, is not included in the list of the potential U.S. sales ban, and Samsung hopes the phablet upgrade will lift any post-Apple gloom at the South Korean group.
"There won't be huge innovative changes in design, but the Note 2 will feature quite a few improvements and enable Samsung to carry on its strong sales momentum in the category," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities. "With the launch, Samsung will also be trying to turn around downbeat sentiment after the U.S. legal defeat."
The new version of the Note is expected to feature a thinner and slightly bigger 5.5-inch screen, powerful quad-core processor, the latest version of Google's Android operating system called Jellybean, and improved stylus function.
It's the latest product to illustrate Samsung's attempts to make bold design changes as it comes increasingly under pressure to differentiate its line-up from the iPhone, whose simple and large touchscreen-based design revolutionized the mobile industry and is still considered the gold standard of design.

Samsung is also working to introduce smartphones with bendable screens later this year as it seeks to cement its lead in the $200 billion plus global smartphone market and challenge Apple, which is expected to launch its new iPhone on September 12.
The new Note comes just three months after Samsung released the third generation of its Galaxy S smartphone, which has already sold more than 10 million, and succeeds the original 5.3-inch Note, which was introduced in late-October and was a surprise hit, selling more than 10 million within 9 months.
Other firms that offer so-called phablets include LG Electronics and HTC. ABI Research has predicted phablet shipments could reach 208 million by 2015.
Unlike Apple, Samsung depends on various line-ups, offering a range of models in different sizes and with different software, and keeps its product cycle shorter. Later this year, it is expected to launch a new model running Microsoft's upgraded Windows operating system.
Samsung shares rose 2.9 percent to 1.23 million won in Seoul on Wednesday - in a broader Korean market that closed up 0.6 percent - and are now down just 3.5 percent from their levels before last Friday's U.S. ruling. The shares slumped 7.5 percent on Monday, wiping $12 billion off the company's market value.
A U.S. judge on Tuesday set a December 6 court date to hear Apple's request for a permanent injunction against Samsung smartphones, which could delay the potential impact of Apple's legal victory. The mobile company today posted a video showing a woman ride a bike down a street. About midway through that clip, a text overlay comes up that reads, "things are about to change." The video's description on YouTube adds a bit more details, saying that things will change "on 5 September 2012. Stay tuned!"
Nokia announced earlier this month that it'll hold its New York press conference on September 5. The company said that event will be held in partnership with Microsoft, leading many to believe that Windows Phone 8-bundled devices will take center stage.
Microsoft made some waves with Windows Phone 8, saying that Windows Phone 7-based devices won't be upgradeable to the new operating system. Instead, the devices will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 -- a version that adds some of the features found in Microsoft's new operating system, but not all.
